BRATISLAVA, Slovakia- Over 1,000 people attended the Dúhový* Pride Bratislava festival this past weekend, which was violently disrupted when about 80-100 neo-nazi skinheads crashed the rally and began tossing tear gas canisters, stones & eggs at the crowd. In all, about 29 people were arrested. Local activists & the Slovak media blame the police for inadequately protecting the marchers. However, Interior Minister Robert Kaliňák claims that Dúhový Pride organizers were well aware that the neo-nazis would attack the event & should have provided their own security.
This was the third gay Pride event in Eastern Europe that was disrupted by force.
*Dúhový is the Slovak word for “rainbow”.

HARARE, Zimbabwe- Two LGBT activists were arrested Friday night when police raided the offices of the non-profit organization Gays and Lesbians of Zimbabwe (GALZ) in search of “indecent material”. Ellen Chadehama (age 34) & Ingatius Mhambi (age 38) were originally charged with possession of “indecent images” now face additional allegations that they “undermined the authority of the President” when a plaque (a gift from former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown) denouncing President Robert Mugabe for his homophobic views was found during the raid. Chadehama & Mhambi were expected to be released on bail today, but will spend another two nights in jail due to a national holiday.
Although homosexuality is a crime in Zimbabwe, it is rare that arrests are made.
